Prodn. of aromatic hydrocarbons is carried out by contacting an alcohol and/or ether feed with a catalyst comprising a crystalline silicate (I). After calcination in air at 500 degrees C for 1 hr, (I) has the following characteristics: (a) thermally stable at >600 degrees C; (b) characteristic X-ray powder diffraction pattern; (c) adsorbs >=0.8 mmole/g n-hexane andn >=0.5 mmole/g 2,2-dimethylbutane, with a n-hexane/i,2-dimethylbutane adsorption ratio of >=1.5, as measured at 8 x 10-2 bar and 100 degrees C after conversion to the H form and evacuation to 2 x 10-9 bar at 400 degrees C for 16 hr; (d) has the molar compsn. y.(1.0 plus-or-minus 0.3) Mn/2O.y.Al2O3SiO2 (where M is H and/or alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal; n is the valency of M; and 0.01 >= y >=0.005); and (e) the av. crystallite size d (in nm) satisfies the relation: y. ( d / 250 ) 1/2 100. The process is esp. useful for producing aromatic gasoline blending stocks from methanol and/or dimethyl ether. The catalysts have high activity, C5+ selectivity and stability, e.g. giving C5+ products contg. >50% aromatics.
|
