An induction coil 18 for zone melting can be produced by providing a massive ring-shaped body with a gap 26, so that the coil forms a single winding. When radio- frequency current is imposed on such a coil, the current will flow in the surfaces of the coil. By sawing out grooves or openings 34 in the surfaces of the coil, one can alter the distribution of current and, thus, temperature. The current distribution can be established independently for the top and bottom surface of the coil. One or more openings 34 can be filled with strips of conductive material to cancel out the influence of the opening 34 on the current distribution. <IMAGE>
