A pharmaceutical agent, a polyalkylene such as polythene, a plasticizer such as lithium hydroxystearate, and an oily or fatty vehicle, such as liquid paraffin are admixed. Examples of dental pastes and gauze impregnating compositions in which the pharmaceutical agent is glycyrrhetinic acid or a salt thereof, together with cinchocaine, amethocaine hydrochloride, neomycin sulphate and aspirin are given. Specifications 798,655, 799,415, 843,132 and 843,133 are referred to.ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition for topical application, comprises a pharmaceutical agent, such as glycyrrhetinic acid and its derivatives, or xanthoglabrol and its derivatives, and as vehicle a polyalkylene such as polythene together with a plasticiser, such as lichium hydroxytearate, in a neutral oily or fatty base such as liquid paraffin, an analgesic such as cinchocaine, amethocaine hydrochloride, and aspirin, and an antibiotic, such as neomycin sulphate, may also be present in the composition.
