A compact assembly of an internal combustion engine and a heat pump compressor comprises at least one compressor cylinder (4) and at least one engine cylinder (2, 3) provided in a common cylinder block (1), with the engine arranged to drive the compressor, and a rotary face seal (14) is located in an annular recess (13) on a compressor crankshaft web (12) and co-operates with a counterface (18) carried by a bearing (11) common both to the compressor crankshaft (9) and an engine crankshaft (8).
