The pump impeller has a hub (2) which fits over the end of the driving shaft. A backplate (5) extends as a flange from the hub. Four radial blades (4) project axially forward from the backplate and extend radially outwards from the hub. The backplate extends outwards as far as the tip of each blade. Between the blades its periphery runs in a straight line from blade to blade or is curved inward slightly towards the hub. This reduces the material and weight of the backplate and reduces the axial force on the hub and shaft.
