The combustion engine comprises a main combustion chamber (4) contained between a reciprocating piston (2) and a cylinder head (3), a valve (6)-controlled inlet duct (5) and an outlet duct with valve. A precombustion chamber (8) connects with the chamber (4) via a duct (9) and is arranged in an insert (10) in a cylindrical recess (11) of the cylinder head. Only the axially central portion (12) of the insert is in contact with the wall of the recess (11). Its two ends have a reduced outer diameter (13, 15) forming insulating annular gaps (14, 16). The central portion may extend over 0.25 to 0.75, pref. over 0.5 of the total length of the insert.
