The device detects limit values of a parameter represented by a pulse train by counting fixed frequency pulses in between successive pulses of the parameter pulse train. One of the two output signals supplied is dependent upon whether or not a given count is attained. The device periodically repeats a given programme, with intermediate programme pauses of constant duraction. The count procedure between successive parameter pulses takes place during a programme pause. The output signal is provided during part of a programme running phase and comprises a further programme step. The counter (15) is reset at the end of the programme.
