The gate valve is included for large pipes handling hot gas, particularly the exhaust from fluidised bed furnaces. It has a slide housing for incorporating into the pipe, in which a sliding plate (3) is driven vertically. The plate contains a chamber through which cooling air flows, and has a sliding joint by which it is connected to a cooling air pipe (6) mounted on the housing. There can be several such chambers in the plate, each connected to a supply pipe. These chambers may be formed by parallel spaced, cooling air pipes in vertical arrangement, telescopically coupled to cooling air supply pipes.
