Automatic guidance of welding burner along seam - via ultrasonic transceivers connected in electronic comparator circuit used to adjust position of burner

During the welding operation, acoustic signals are transmitted towards the workpiece so an echo is obtd. The lapse of time taken by the echo is compared with a specified desired time, and any difference is employed to actuate a motor which adjusts the position of the burner w.r.t. the seam. The desired time is pref. a time/intensity diagram; and the pref. appts. includes >=1 transmitter and >=1 receiver, esp. >=1 transmitter-receiver connected to a comparator which produces signals actuating the motor, which e.g. adjust the height of the burner.
