The print hammer assembly (3) is intended for a typewritter or the like comprising a single character (1a) carrier (1) having the characters on individual spring fingers (2), and an ink ribbon cartridge (23) capable of taking different ribbons. The print hammer (4) is carried by a parallelogram linkage (11, 12, 5, 6, 8, 9), moved (16, 17, 18) by a solenoid (19), and returned by a spring (15). The cartridge contains control faces (25-27), which affect the operation of the hammer in relation to the carrier (1). These can alter the print pressure and/or hammer motion, in accordance with the requirements of ribbons of different types.
