R1 and R2 represent moieties of a molecule of sodium D-glycero-D-gulo-heptonate or of sodium D-glycero-D-ido-heptonate,
Y represents a hydroxy group or three Y are joined to represent the residue Z,
and a process for the preparation thereof wherein a solution of sodium aluminate is added to the solution of sodium glucoheptonate in such a quantity that the ratio between the number of aluminium atoms and the number of sodium glucoheptonate molecules amounts to from 0.50:1 to 1.50:1 and the resulting solution is optionally spray-dried at an inlet air temperature of 180 to 200 DEG C and outlet air temperature of 90 to 100 DEG C to recover sodium alumoglucoheptonate in powder form.
