The invention concerns a portable unit for use, inter alia, in conjunction with monetary transactions in the same way as an ordinary account card. When carrying out a transaction, the unit 10 is made to interact with a terminal 14, which in turn can be connected to one or more central account-keeping units. The portable unit is provided with a keypad or the like 11 and can also be provided with a presentation element 17, such as a LCD display. When using the unit, it is placed in direct proximity to a terminal 14, and a connection element 12 located on the unit maintains wireless communication with the terminal. This makes it possible for the terminal to do without both keypad and display, which greatly reduces the risk of vandalism and also increases the reliability of service of the installation as a whole. Preferably, the portable unit is also provided with a memory 15 and a co-ordinated control circuit 16.
