New compounds having the general formula <IMAGE> and <IMAGE> are useful as cardiovascular agents, and as intermediates for the preparation of compounds having the general formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R2 is -CHO-, CH2OH or -CH=CH-R3-lower alkylene-CH3; and R3 is keto or hydroxymethyl.
