The prefabricated cellular earthenware block (1) is used as a permanent former in the construction of paved areas. The voids (4) may be filled with e.g. in situ concrete to obtain a pleasing aesthetic affect. A typical unit (1) may have a rectangular framed plan form with partition walls (2, 3) dividing the inner volume into square or rectangular compartments (4). A second type of block may have a cruciform plan with a square compartment (4) forming the node and each leg.
