A silicon dioxide sublayer (3) is firstly applied to the plate (1), insulating the electrode (2) from the liquid crystal. Next, a silicon-oxide alignment layer (6) is applied to the layer (3), at a grazing angle of incidence, indicated by the arrows (7). The alignment layer (6) has an average thickness less than 70 Angströms in such a manner that it is discontinuous. As a result, one part of the liquid-crystal molecules is anchored to the plate (1) at a zero angle, the rest becoming anchored at an angle at approximately 15 DEG , depending on whether they are in contact with the layer (3) or with the layer (6). It is appropriate for the average anchoring angle of the liquid-crystal molecules to be less than 5 DEG . By virtue of this arrangement, the contrast of the display, as a function of the drive voltage, has a threshold by virtue of which the segments which are not to be displayed do not exhibit an undesired contrast effect when a residual voltage, due to multiplexing, is applied to them. <IMAGE>
