Prodn. of expanded plastics by compression of previously heated materials opt. having a fusible sheet of fabric cover, uses a mould provided with sharp rims and set so that the mould may remain slightly open until the surface core structure has stabilised, then closed to trim the flash and/or residual covers from the mould parting line. Process is suitable for producing smooth, resilient mouldings, such as automobile sun-visors, without involving a subsequent machining treatment to trim the parting line. Pref. the gap initially held between each mould rim and the opposite face or half of the mould is 0.2-1 mm.
