Spasmolytic N-4'-pyridyl-3,3-di:phenyl-propylamine prepn. - by condensn. of di:phenyl propionyl chloride with 4-amino:pyridine and reduction

Prepn. of N-(4'-pyridyl)-3,3-diphenyl-propylamine of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting cinnamic acid with dry benzene in the presence of a Lewis acid via a Friedel-Crafts reaction at 0-80 degrees C; (b) chlorinating the diphenylpropionic acid obtd. in an anhydrous solvent at 50-100 degrees C; (c) reacting prod. with 4-aminopyridine in an aprotic solvent; and (d) reducing the amine obtd. after crystallisation from (m)ethanol using LiAlH4 in an aprotic solvent. (I) is a known spasmolytic, esp. effective on smooth muscles.
