In a process for coating envelopes of electric light sources with an inorganic pigment, e.g. electro-statically, the pigment grains of the coating are coated with an organo-metallic glass precursor compound before applying the pigment to the envelope, thus enabling the formation of a very thin glass layer on the surface of the pigment grains; the composition of this layer is such that its softening point is lower than the softening point of the envelope and achieves a good adhesion between the envelope and the pigment without damage to the pigment in the subsequent heat treatment in which the precursor is transformed into glass. The glass precursor compound is formed in a solution containing organic solvent(s) in which selected organo-metallic and inorganic compounds have been dissolved. A suspension is prepared from the solution and the pigment, followed by evaporation of the solvent and heat treatment. |
