Open hearth fire bricks - fit in rows into back plate, each brick having longitudinal top groove, and corresponding bottom side projection

The fire back wall is for an open hearth, and comprises a robust plate (14, 15, 16) on the front of which is built a series of rows of fire bricks (6). Each of the bricks (9) used has a U-shaped groove (10) at the top on its long side, and a corresponding projection on its lower side. This brick formation enables the successive rows of bricks to be fitted with ease into one another, and in turn in the back plate framewprk, and minimises the possibility of brick disintegration due to the effect of continuous heat.
