PURPOSE:To prepare phenylacetic acid useful as a raw material of perfumery, medicines, pesticides, etc., economically, in one step, by reacting benzene, formaldehydes, and CO, in the presence of a catalyst containing a noble metal of VIII group of the periodic table, and Br or I. CONSTITUTION:Phenylacetic acid is prepared in one step, from low cost raw materials, without using a cyanate which requires an expensive waste-water treatment process, by reacting (A) benzene, (B) formaldehyde or its derivative selected from paraformaldehyde, polyoxymethylene and trioxane, and (C) carbon monoxide, in the presence of (D) a cstalyst comprising (a) a noble metal of the VIII group of the periodic table (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, or Pt) or its compound such as halide and (b) bromine, iodine or their compounds such as hydrogen bromide. |
