The detector is applicable to a ground model and has a transparent base (16) with distance graduations and with vertical support rods (18) clamped to a ruler (16) on sliding blocks (20). The rods are marked in height contours and have vertically sliding collars (26) between which can be strung a thread (32) representing the gradient. The ruler can be bent along the plane of the model to follow an intended route. The thread then provides a rapid determination of the gradient, by comparison with a graduated chart.
