Cephem derivs. I(R1 =alky1, ary1, alkyloxy, cycloalky1, cycloalkeny1, alkylthio, arylthio, cyano; R2 = R1, H, halo or NH2; R2 and R3 may form a ring; R3 = H, AcO, N3, cyano, arylthio, heterocyclylthio) were prepd. by reaction of CO2H derivatives obtained from R1R2-CHCO2M (M = inorg. or org. cation) with II-SO3 complex with 7-aminocephalosporanic acids. Thus, a mixt. of 0.21 g NaOAc in II and 1.3 g SO3 soln. in II was added to a mixt. of 0.53 g 7-amino-3-methy1-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid and 1.25 m1 2N-NaOH in aq. with ice cooled at pH 8-9 and the whole was stirred for 2 hr to give 96 % I.
