The invention is oxalic acid derivatives of formula I: I wherein R represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. These compounds are useful as intermediates in the preparation of insecticidally active compounds. They can be prepared by reacting a benzyl cyanide derivative of general formula II II with an ester of oxalic acid of general formula III III wherein R is as defined above and R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
