PURPOSE:To prepare a hydrogel having high water absorption properties and stable even when used for long time in the water-containng state, by copolymerizing a specific difunctional compound with a water-soluble unsaturated monomer. CONSTITUTION:(A) A difunctional compound expressed by the formula (R is H or CH3; m is integer of 3-200; n is 0 or integer of 1-200) is copolymerized with (B) a water-soluble unsaturated monomer consisting mainly of (a) an ethylenic unsaturated group-containing carboxylic acid (derivative) [e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylamide, etc.] or (b) a sulfonic acid (derivative) [e.g. vinylsulfonic acid (sodium salt), etc.]. USE:Useful not only for water-absorbing materials but for sanitary materials, e.g. diapers, etc., and industrial materials, e.g. separating agents for water in oil, carriers for chromatography etc.
