The product is a peptide substance with a molecular weight of between 500 and 1000, soluble in water, thermostable and dialysable, which is obtained from cultures of Schistosoma mansoni. It is prepared by incubating adult S. mansoni cells in water, then separating the cellular bodies and debris of the said nematodes, dialysing the liquid medium obtained against water and freeze-drying the dialysed fraction. The protein thus obtained inhibits degranulation of mast cells in an irreversible manner, that is to say even after washing the cells; it can be expected that it will inhibit the release of the histamine and catecholamines contained in mast cells and will thus prevent various anaphylactic and allergic manifestations.
