The mould consists of two long side walls between which two narrow walls can be moved to vary the slab width. When a change in width is required, the feeding of molten metal via a casting pipe into the mould is stopped, and the slab is drawn out of the mould until only a small amt. of the melt remains in the mould; drawing is then stopped. A frame is then located in the mould to form a chill in the remaining melt, and molten metal is fed into the frame, the width of which corresponds with the new slab width required. After a solid skin has formed inside the frame, the narrow mould walls are moved inwards or outwards so they butt against the outside of the frame; and casting with the new slab width can then be continued. The width of the slab can be increased or reduced without the danger of a run-out, and within a min. amt. of time.
|
