The steering assembly involves a purely hydraulic system or a semi-hydraulic system selected via a selection lever associated with the steering wheel in accordance with the basic conditions. The hydraulic pump driven by the engine is coupled via flow and pressure regulating valves to a distribution valve switched in accordance with the selected system. When the valve is in the position corresp. to the fully hydraulic system the steering shaft is uncoupled from the steering linkage and is mechanically coupled to the hydraulic steering valve supplied with pressurised oil from the pump during rotation of the steering wheel. When the latter is not operated, the pressuring oil is fed through the steering valve and back along a return line to the hydraulic reservoir.
