An X-ray indexing plate has a plastics base (11) on which is applied the relevant character (12) using a metal foil is sufficient to thickness to stop the X-rays and provide a white character on the film. The base is inserted into a plastics sheath (16) and sealed at each end. The indexing character is easily handled and does not suffer from lead contamination risk as do conventional lead characters. The plastics cover is easily cleaned sterilised and holds no health risk. The fitting is easily handled and provides an economic data input for the film.
