Lead accumulator cell with gas-tight stoppers - which contain catalyst for recombination of hydrogen and oxygen, and/or valve limiting gas pressure in cell

Cell is fitted with at least one gas pressure limiting valve in its gas cavity, and also with a holder with restricted permeability for the gas. The holder contains a catalyst for recombination of the H2 and O2 evolved during operation of the accumulator, so water is obtd.; and the holder acts as a mechanical barrier restricting the flow of gas to the catalyst. The pref. pressure limiting valve functions according to the pressure or temp. of the gas, and is located in one of the stoppers on the accumulator lid; and the valve may alternatively be fitted in the stopper contg. the catalyst. One pref. catalyst holder consists of a porous ceramic frit. The recombination of H2 and O2 to form H2O liberates heat, and the catalyst can be destroyed if it is overheated. Arrangement limits the flow of H2 and O2 to the catalyst.
