The hydraulic shock absorber is partic. intended for a rail vehicle. It comprises a cylindrical housing (1) with bottom (3) and top cover (2), an oil-filled cylinder (4) in the housing, a piston (5) with non-return valve (32) between an upper (7) and a lower (8) chamber in the cylinder (4), and a piston rod (9) extending through the cover (2). The annular space (12) between the housing and cylinder is partly filled with oil and partly with gas which latter is contained between flexible membrane walls (13). The two chambers (7, 8) are connected via bores (21, 22) and a duct (23). The space (12) connects with the chamber (3) via opposite-action non-return valves (37, 42) and with the chamber (7) via a one-way non-return valve (46).
