<p>Process and apparatus for drying wet solid material. The process comprises introducing wet solid material into a dryer and into contact with one side of a plurality of heated surfaces and vaporizing liquid contained therein, withdrawing the vaporized liquid and compressing the same to a pressure greater than in the dryer, returning the liquid to the other side of the heated surfaces, condensing the same and releasing the latent heat energy therefrom, using such energy to vaporize liquid on the opposite side of the surfaces and withdrawing the condensate and substantially dried solids from the dryer. The drying apparatus comprises a housing (11) having entrance and exit openings (13) and (15), a conveyer (17) for delivering material to be dried into a conveyer (19) for discharging dried material from the housing. A plurality of hollow heat exchange trays (25) end (27) are disposed in the dryer and connected to an external heat source and to atmosphere. A compressor (57) is connected to the housing and operates at positive pressure with respect to the pressure therein to withdraw vaporized liquid therefrom, compress the same and direct it to the opposite side of the hollow heat exchange trays (25) and (27), condense the same to release latent heat energy and vaporize the liquid on the opposite heated surfaces. </p> |
