An optionally substituted anthraquinone is manufactured by oxidising the corresponding anthracene in an inert aromatic solvent, for example nitrobenzene, in the presence of oxygen and from 0.01 to 50 parts by weight of nitrogen dioxide per 100 parts by weight of the anthracene. |
