The open metal wire (2) to be coated is driven, after preheating by means of a resistance (6), through a coating device (7), composed of two similar halves (7a and 7b) arranged on either side of the wire. Each of these halves (7a, 7b) comprises a rotary cylindrical metal drum (8a, 8b), arranged transversally to the wire so as to be substantially in contact with the latter, as well as an electrostatic powdering device (12a, 12b) arranged to the right of the portion of the drum diametrically opposed to that in contact with the wire. The insulating thermoplastic particles (14) continuously deposited on these portions of drum by the powdering devices (12a, 12b) are then carried continuously due to the rotation of the drum up the vicinity of the wire (2), where those of the particles which come into direct contact with the wire are then forced to fix onto it permanently. The wire thus coated goes then through a heating device (21), which melt these particles into a continuous coating around the wire. This coating is then hardened by means of the cooling device (22).
