The twisting machine produces an accurate pitch in an unstressed metal strip is subjected to a torsional moment while travelling in the longitudinal direction. The strip is twisted into the plastic region so that the ratio between the width and thickness will be 10 or more. The tape passes from a feed roller through two sections where the tension is provided by passing it between a pair of driven rollers The relative angular setting between the two sections traversed by the strip can be automatically adjusted. The adjusting elements are controlled electrically by signals obtained from a measuring device which determines the pitch of the plastic torsion in the strip. The measuring signal is compared with a reference signal and the error is used as the signal for adjusting the plastic torsion.
