In a method for treating cellulose containing pulp, the pulp is fractionated in two or more fractions according to particle size before treating one or more of the fractions with ozone. The fractionation can be carried out in a fractionating device which is included in a complete treatment process, the fractionating device constituting a series of screens. Depending on the quality of the finished paper product, various ozone treated and untreated fractions of the pulp are brought together at various stages in the treatment operation.
