1536993 Processing radioactive waste WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 March 1977 [2 March 1976] 08802/77 Heading G6R Spent radioactive ion-exchange material is reduced in volume by drying to a moisture content of less than 50% by weight, and then thermally decomposing the material in the form of a fluidized bed, the fluidizing gas being at first oxygen-deficient, and subsequently being changed to an oxygen-containing gas with the amount of oxygen being controlled so that the temperature is maintained below 700‹ C. The oxygen-deficient gas may be N 2 , H 2 , He, or CO 2 and the oxygen-containing gas O 2 or air. The effluent gas during fluidization with the oxygendeficient gas may be burned with excess oxygen and then passed through a cooler-scrubber, a filter, an absorber, and an absolute filter. |
