A fluid mixture comprising a number of isotopes in a carrier gas is introduced into a curved passage (14) of a channel (54) in which it is accelerated. In order to increase the separation of the isotopes which is already obtained by the centrifugal force affecting the different masses of the isotopes, one individual type of these isotopes is chosen and is heated by vibrational excitation by applying a laser radiation (52) which originates from an exciting source (50) and which extends transversely to the direction of flow of the mixture. This excitation causes a large increase in the difference between the densities of the isotopes. As a result, the mixture which enters a chamber (30) is divided into a fraction comprising an increased concentration of the chosen isotope, this fraction flowing on one side of a partition (32), and into another fraction with lower concentration of this isotope, the latter fraction flowing on the other side of the partition. An appreciably increased separation efficiency is obtained in this way. Application to isotope enrichment, especially that of uranium. <IMAGE>
