The pump or compressor comprises a housing (1) with a cylindrical bore (1.1) contg. a rotatable reciprocating piston (3) capble of axially sliding on but rotating with the co-axial drive shaft (4) carried in bearings (6.1 6.2) in the housing. The two end faces of the piston form cam faces with circumferential wave contours in anti-phase. The ends (2.1 2.2) of the cylinder form corresponding cam faces with in-phase circumferential wave contours. Rotation of the shaft causes the rotating piston to reciprocate and form chambers (A1 A2) of cyclically varying volume at both ends of the piston.
