Testing relative shear strength of welds between lead straps - which are used to connect electrode plates in accumulators, by measuring electric resistance of welds

The accumulator consists of a row of cells formed by dividing walls which are part of the casing; and the walls contain holes. Plates of the same polarity are joined by flanged Pb straps, the flanges being pressed together through holes by the welding electrodes so a recess is formed on the outer surface of each flange. A pair of feeler electrodes mounted on a pair of spring-loaded tongs is pressed into the two recesses, so the resistance of the weld can be fed to a process and display circuit. Several pairs of feeler electrodes are pref. applied simultaneously to all the welds leading to one accumulator terminal, so the total resistance may be obtd. The tong arms are pref. also provided with a test electric current.
