Method for admixing protective additives or nutrient solns. to cell suspensions comprises atomising the medium to be added (opt. together with a propellant gas) into cell suspension containers held at the requisite temp. and then contacting with the cell suspension having a coherent surface (e.g. a liq. surface). The procedure is for the treatment of suspensions of cells e.g. erythrocytes prior to e.g. lyophilisation. It provides conditions under which sterility can be maintained, and does not subject the cells to excessive mechanical forces. A large contact area between cells and additives is assured, and osmotic shock due to contact with undiluted additive is avoided.
