The packing of a soft product block such as a natural cheese block provides complete encasing with flexible air and moisture impermeable foil material so that a compressible container can be enclosed and compressed. The side plaes project beyond and below the encased block and there are channel-shaped slots on the covers to accept the top and bottom edges of the side plates. The depth fo the slots in so chosen that there is sufficient plug between the top and bottom edges of the side plates and the base faces of the slots that the cover can be pressed inwards to the middle of the container to compress the material to a block.
