The shear has pivoted crossed blades normally biased in an opened position. A modular type latch allows single handed locking of the handles in a locked position or releases the locked handles into an opened position. The structure comprises an inboard locking part and an outboard operating part. The locking part is freely feedable by insertion through a latch-receiving slot in a side wall of one of the cheeks of the shear handle. The latch is frictionally held by and slidable relative to the walls of the latch-receiving slot, and also with the base of the operating part at its interface with the cheek surface.
