Apparatus for continuously filtering and optionally degassing molten copper and otherwise extracting impurities therefrom, comprises at least one disposable porous ceramic foam filter 15 located in a tundish through which molten copper flows from an inlet (top left) to a spout 13 leading to a continuous casting machine (not shown). Perforate pipes 14 allow an inert or reactive gas to bubble through the copper, cleaning the filters and removing impurities from the copper. Vacuum may be applied at 16 to degas the copper.
