Fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine by a plunger reciprocated by a cam 14 via a two-port tappet 22, 37 having a liquid filled space 38 therebetween, the rate at which liquid escapes from the space 38 during the delivery stroke being determined by a valve 41 controlled by a device 11 as a function of an engine parameter, e.g. the speed of rotation of the combustion air in the engine's combustion chamber.
