MANUFACTURE OF FIBROUS ACTIVATED CARBON

PURPOSE:To manufacture fibrous activated carbon having high adsorption power by oxidizing acrylinitrile type fiber contg. an ammonium halide and one or more kinds of cpds. selected from II, IV and VII group metallic element cpds. in a specified ratio followed by activation. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile (AN) type fiber is prepared contg. 0.120wt% of an ammonium halide such as NH4Cl and 0.01-0.5wt% as metal of one or more kinds of cpds. selected from II, IV and VII group metallic element cpds. such as TiO2. This fiber is made from polyacrylonitrile contg. more than 80wt% of AN or copolymer of AN and other copolymerizable unsatd. cpd. The AN-type fiber contg. the above- mentioned inorg. cpds. is then calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere of 200-300 deg.C and activated by heating to 700-1000 deg.C under an atmosphere such as steam to manufacture the desired fibrous activated carbon.
