A method of comminuting solid particles consists in forming a slurry of solid particles are comminuted and cavitation induced in the slurry by contacting it with a resonant vibration transmitting member. This member is mounted to minimise loss of vibratory energy to its support and is positioned in the chamber so that there are no inactive regions of vibratory energy through which the slurry can flow. The liquid is then separated from the comminuted particles. The inventional provides apparatus for treating coal to remove contaminants which increases throughput efficiency while avoiding the necessity for high pressures and temperatures.
