The valve needle (4) of the injection valve (3) has a pintle-like projection (8) beneath its seat (10), which projection is enclosed by an annular gap (7). A deflection element (14), which is fixed on the cylinder cover (1) independently of the movement of the valve needle (4), is located in the combustion chamber (15) coaxially with the pintle-like projection (8). It comprises a pintle-like section (16) with downward truncated cone (17) joined to this. The hollow jet of fuel emerging from the annular gap (7) is deflected by the deflection element (14) into the combustion chamber (15) where it is distributed in a fan shape, the deflection and distribution remaining constant throughout the injection process due to the arrangement of the deflection element separate from the valve needle (4), as a result of which combustion of the fuel is improved. <IMAGE>
