The refuse is contained in a hopper and is fed to the compacting unit by a reciprocating movement of a slide gate mechanically connected to the reciprocating movement-producing assembly. The gate forms a part of the compacting chamber with a base surface. Both the gate and the base slope towards the receiving chamber. The compacting action is carried out by the reciprocating movement of a pressure plate which is fitted to the piston rod and a cylinder assembly on its upper part. The lower part of the pressure plate is provided with hinges connected to the side walls of the compacting chamber. During the retracting movement of the pressure plate swivelling around hinges takes place whereby the lower edge of the plate lifts clear of the base and occasional waste particles on the base surface are not dragged back.
