A textile winding machine has a moving traverse mechanism with disc-shaped yarn driving elements set close together, and moving in opposite directions along the path of transverse movement. The yarn is transferred from one driving element to the other, moving in the opposite direction at each end of the traverse span. A positioning yarn guide is placed in the yarn path leading to the moving traverse mechanism, and supplementary control means act upon the yarn as it passes between the positioning guide and the moving traverse mechanism. The control means extend the traverse movement outwardly from the points of transfer so that the length of the movement, measured at a point in front of the point where the yarn reaches the moving traverse, is greater than the distance between the points of transfer. The outward extension of the traverse movement effectively prevents an undesirable inward movement of the yarn wound on the package. Such inward movement results in a slight softening of the yarn and a momentary loss of tension, which in turn gives rise to the 'hard shoulders' and 'spiders'webs' found on poorly wound packages.
|
