An exhaust gas oxygen sensor adapted for installation in the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine comprises a ceramic (e.g. titania) element (46, 48) to sense the partial pressure of oxygen in the exhaust gases to which the sensor is exposed. The sensor has a steel body (12), a ceramic insulator (16) which is used to support the sensing element (46, 48) and its associated lead wires (30, 32) which pass through passages (22) in the insulator. Terminal pins (50, 52, 54) are inserted into enlarged end portions (70) of the passages and are electrically connected to the lead wires (30, 32) and retained therein by a cement material and include a shoulder (56) lying outside the passage, a second portion (58) lying within the passage in contact with the internal surface thereof and a third portion, preferably in the form of a groove (60) lying out of contact with the internal surface of the passage. Insertion of the pin into the passage causes the cement material to flow into the space between the exterior of the terminal pin and the interior of the insulator passage formed by the groove 60. The bond thus formed between the terminal pin and the insulator and prevents leakage of exhaust gases from the exhaust conduit to flow through the sensor to the ceramic environment. Seepage of the cement material out of passage during assembly is also prevented.
|
